Dry Rot

Dry rot is a weakening of wood caused by one of several species of fungus. The fungus digests the parts of the wood that give the wood strength and stiffness. Weakened wood is typically somewhat dry, hence the name dry rot, and brittle and may have a blocky appearance.

Western Subterranean Termites

Western subterranean termites are highly destructive to Douglas fir and other common building timbers.

Flying Termites?

Yes, during the warmer months you may see the flying alates (winged reproductives) caste take to the air and swarm in their thousands, In order to meet up with swarmers of other nests in the area so they can establish new termite colonies in the local area.

Colony Nest Development

Western subterranean termites constantly search for new food sources. They are known to enter buildings through cracks in concrete flooring or to travel under parquetry or tile flooring through gaps of less than 1/16″ wide.
Where moisture regularly collects inside the wall or other cavities or a building, say from faulty plumbing or broken roof tiles, the Western subterranean termite can develop a subsidiary colony nest which may not require contact with the ground to ensure it’s survival.
